If You’re a Lizard, Be a Lizard

In a world that often pushes us to conform, authenticity can feel like rebellion. As a Black woman in the UK, staying true to yourself means navigating microaggressions and unspoken expectations:

"You're not Black enough." "Can you be less... Afrikan?" "Why aren’t you in braids?" "You're too vocal about your opinions."

Sound familiar? The truth is, there’s no one way to be Black, Afrikan, or a Woman. Our diversity is our strength, and our authenticity is power.

The Roots of Authenticity

Take our hair, for example. Our coils and kinks have a history, yet they’re often deemed "unprofessional." Back home, some of us were forced to shave our heads to appear "neat" while others kept their natural hair. Why is our natural state considered less presentable?

Authenticity isn’t just about looks—it’s about confidence. Your accent? Beautiful. Your interests? Valid. You don’t have to like golf to fit in, nor should you fake enthusiasm for clubbing if you'd rather watch a movie in bed.

Embracing Authenticity

Here’s how to reclaim your true self:

  1. Know Yourself - Reflect on your values and joys. Journaling helps.

  2. Embrace Your Roots - Celebrate your Afrikan heritage through food, music, and traditions.

  3. Challenge Stereotypes - You can love jollof rice and Shakespeare; your identity isn’t one-dimensional.

  4. Find Your Tribe - Surround yourself with those who appreciate your authenticity.

  5. Be Kind to Yourself - Unlearning societal conditioning takes time.

WOLA’s Mission to Authenticity

At WOLA's recent workshop, we reaffirmed that true leadership isn’t just about what you do—it's about who you are. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

Your authentic self isn’t just good enough - it’s extraordinary.

I loved this article soo much. Especially the point on Edges! Why is it seen as untidy if i choose not to lay my edges? I brush them back, but having to apply some ointment to look 'neat' is beyond me.
